The Jokers had a key role to play in the day-to-day life of the Academy and its students. Each one represented a collection of experiences from all of the different timelines that the summoners could touch, and joining those experiences to their normal Sidians increased their strength. Finding a Joker in the maze of realities inside the Space-Time Engine required no small amount of luck, hence the title they all sported. And they had to be summoned, not encountered, since they did not slip through the cracks like the Irregulars did. So said the common lore shared by everybody at the Academy.

And yet a single Joker had emerged from the Space-Time Engine unnoticed – the inevitable result of a one-in-a-million chance, perhaps. She found the absurdity of it amusing, and yet she had no idea what to do with herself without a summoner to give her orders. Did that make her one of the Irregulars, or did it make her another type of extradimensional being entirely? That question had no immediate answer, and so she resolved to ask it of the first Irregular – or Sidian – she encountered as she wandered freely through the grounds of the Academy, grounds normally forbidden to her kind.

It did not take long for a shadow to emerge from the forest around her, looking down at her with interest, but not concealing her presence. A Vampire, or so the students at the Academy said. Most of the "Vampires" they encountered were jiangshi, the so-called Chinese "hopping" Vampire, frequent Irregulars subject to destroy-on-sight protocols. But this Vampire did not attack the wayward Joker, instead regarding her with interest, and that suggested to the Joker that she might be more Irregular than Sidian. But what did she do with that information? Perhaps the Vampire might have a little advice?

"I've got to tell you," the Joker said, winding one of her white twintails around her little finger, "if you're as confused about being here as I am right now, then we've got at least one thing in common." She could not suppress a smile as wind passed through the branches above them, hinting at the clear blue sky beyond. "And you've got to be confused. You're supposed to be in a coffin during the day, right? Not that you look like a corpse. At all, really." True, the Vampire had unnatural red eyes, as well as purple skin, but it all looked normal for her, as if she been born that way, not made.

And the Vampire said, the soft music of her voice almost hypnotic, "The rules of this world don't apply to us, most of the time. I don't need a coffin, I'd rather sleep at night, and I don't drink blood. Not much of a jiangshi, perhaps." She smiled, too, her fangs white behind red-painted lips. "I'd say the same is true for you. You're a source of power for the Sidians, but you're not here under the usual circumstances, so you're wondering what to do with yourself." A note of bemusement. "All Irregulars feel that way, really, but some handle it more maturely than others. I'm sure you know that."

"So you are an Irregular, then." But the Vampire had no aura of menace about her, the telltale note for which all Sidians had to listen. "But, if I'm one, too, then I don't have anything to fear." She thought about it for a second. "Unless madness waits for me if I stay here too long, but I don't think there's ever been an Irregular Joker. Did I just break the rules of this universe, or is it a loophole?" The Vampire seemed as entertained by that thought as she was. "I guess I'll have to enjoy my stay here, then, however long it lasts." And she held out a hand. "Pleased to meet you, then. Do you have a name?"

The Vampire accepted the gesture, and her own hand had a surprising warmth to it that the Joker had never expected from the supposed Undead. "Names are unimportant for our kind. There are too many of us, and we are too alike for names to mean anything. If you call me Jiangshi, I'll call you Joker. That will keep things simple." And the Joker nodded her acceptance of that. "All right, then. Our chances of survival double if we stay together. The Sidians don't come to the forest too often, especially this far away." The Vampire grinned. "But you do have to control the urge to destroy them."

"Fair enough," the Joker replied, "especially considering Irregulars normally only appear one at a time. I don't think two can be eliminated so easily if they work together." That thought made a spark in her mind. "And that's all we have to do, right? Don't really need to eat or drink anything most of the time. We just exist, and that's it, even if it's only a fractional existence, part in this world, part in some other." The idea made her feel strong. "Besides, why do I exist? To learn, and to pass that knowledge on to others." She clenched her fists. "This learning will just be a little more hands-on, that's all."

"You learn more quickly than most," Jiangshi said, offering her arm, which the Joker accepted. "Perhaps we were once from the same timeline?" She blushed, if only a little. "So stay with me a little while, and we'll make this world our home." Next to her, the Joker stood quite a bit shorter than she did, but the energy she exuded was almost visible, there was so much of it. "We'll try and keep the fighting to a minimum, but there will be days where we can't do much about it. There are many of us, but there are many Sidians, too, and many summoners." She said the last word like it had a bad taste.

"Bring 'em on," the Joker said, sealing their deal with a wink.

END.
