Yes! Same set up as femslash100. And thank you for asking because I didn't even realize that's not at all clear in the rules, so I'll update them now. :)
Are you going to be mirroring on LiveJournal at all?
(I ask because the femslash100 dreamwidth account was, somehow (don't ask me how, I don't get the technicalities of linking the journaling sites at all), so when I was collecting links for femslash-today I'd link to the fics posted over here as well as on the LJ femslash100. But without an LJ mirror for the femslash-today reading journal to follow I don't think I can do that.)
No, they can be parts of an ongoing story if that's what you'd prefer to write! And hmm, that should probably specified in the rules, actually. I will fix that. :)
Hi! I mostly joined the comm to do the Sappho prompt table (but will be filling regular challenge prompts if the inspiration ever strikes). Can I post ficlets for that prompt table to the comm as I would do an ordinary prompt? I would be posting the prompts I fill to AO3 anyway and understand how to add them to collections etc, but am unsure where to post prompt table fills here. I just wanted to ask before I made my claim. Thank you!
(Also, looking at the definition of femslash given on the comm, I feel it could be changed slightly to incorporate groups of three or more, as long as all characters in the ship self-identify as women? Unless the specific use of the word two was deliberate, in which case, never mind.)
Hi there and welcome! And yes, that is correct, you can post the prompt table responses here in the comm just as you would regular challenge ficlets. If you're posting them to AO3 you can simply link them here if you'd prefer that. :)
OH, I could have sworn that said 'two or more' - it was certainly supposed to say that! Thank you so much for pointing it out, I will fix it right now as threesomes/moresomes are definitely more than welcome here. Which, now that I check, also doesn't actually seem to be in the rules. :( Man, I fell down on that one, but I'll rectify that as well. Seriously, thank you!
Hi! I just wanted to double check that the prompts could be used for individual chapters (of 100-1000) words, and then like a finished three chapter fic would work for filling those three prompts?
That's definitely okay! All that matters is that there's at least some kind of distinction between what's being written for each prompt so separate chapters would work perfectly. :)
I've never belonged to a comm before, and it's been over ten years since I've used any website like LiveJournal or Dreamwidth extensively. Does anyone have advice on starting out... or perhaps a link to some comm etiquette advice? I'm afraid I'm completely out of my depth.
Hi there and welcome! It's pretty laid back here, and the basics are really just write a fic and then post it and that's as complicated as it gets!
You can find the comm rules here in the profile but the quick version is: all fic should be f/f and between 100 and 1000 words, and you can write based on either the current weekly prompt or for the prompts at the ongoing Sappho challenge.
For posting: here's a link to post here. It doesn't really matter what you put in the subject line, but the usual thing is to say which challenge/prompt you're writing for.
In the body of the post it's standard to use a header to let readers know what your story's about. If you look at the comm you can see the kind of thing most people use, but the standard is something like:
Title: Fandom: Pairing: Rating: Word Count: (which is isn't strictly necessary, but when I do the prompt post for the week you get a heart awarded based on your word count) Summary:
You can then either post your fic here in the comm, following on from the header, or post it somewhere else (like AO3 or your personal journal) and provide a link. If you post the fic here, then if it's over 100 words or rated higher than PG-13 it needs to go under a cut. You cand find an explanation of how to use a cut here in the dreamwidth faq.
If you want to post a big bunch of stories all at once, it's usual to put them all in one entry rather than in separate entries.
All the fic here is tagged with fandom, author and challenge tags. You can tag your post yourself using the tag section below the big entry box on the posting page or I can just do it for you after you post (which is not a problem at all!) Only the mod can create new tags, so as a new author, I'll make a tag for you once you've made your first post and if you're writing a fandom that hasn't been featured here before, I'll make a tag for that too.
I'm trying to think of anything else, but I'm sure I've probably missed something really obvious, so please just ask if you have any other questions!
I don't know exactly how to explain my question, so, sorry if I'm not clear, but can I use a canon genderfluid character who is presenting as female during the story?
Specifically, I was thinking about Lady Loki in Marvel's Avengers Academy. In the game, Loki is recognized as genderfluid and has a story line about presenting as female again after a while presenting as male, and is recognized by the other characters as female during that story line.
I know it's not the same as identifying as a woman, but I felt it was enough of a gray-area to warrant the question instead of just dismissing the idea.
Oh, and I'm writing for the remainder challenge so no worries if you can't answer before the end of this one.
Well, and since I'm already here, I might as well ask this too, is there like a maximum amount of fills we can do per post? I know if we make several at once we should post them all in a single post, but I was thinking if it was too many, the post would be very large, so maybe it would be better to divide the fills in a few posts (I have 54 for the next remainder so far, and will probably have more by then, so I was afraid of making a post too large).
That sounds fine! A genderfluid character who's presenting as and being recognized as female imo definitely qualifies to be included here, so go for it. :)
And no, there's no maximum amount of fills, so just divide things up however's practical for you. As long as you're not posting a vast amount individually, then it's absolutely okay to split them up enough to manageable. (Also, fifty four and more to come? Wow, hats off to you, because that is very impressive!)
Platonic relationships are definitely welcome! I guess 'femslash' has tended to be traditionally defined as romantic/sexual relationships only but for the purposes of this comm at least, I think it can absolutely include platonic relationships between women. :)
Is it allowed to write a fic based on a song titled like the weekly challenge? I don't know, if my question is clear, but for example, if I wanted in the next remainder period write for the prompt Toy and base it on a song titled Toy even if no one is toying with anyone nor any toys appear in the story, would that be too far from the actual prompt?
- For the purposes of this comm, we're defining 'femslash' as a relationship between two or more characters/people who self-identify as women.
i wondered if presumed-male characters in canon being written as trans women fell under this rule? just wanted to make sure before i went off with my trans!fic, lol.
They do count under that rule! I think that could probably be clearer there, so I will ponder on that, but definitely, they only have to self-identify as women (or woman aligned in the case of nonbinary characters) in the fic, not in canon, so yes, go off with your fic for sure. :)
Hey! I left LJ but had joined up on DW first, and I haven't done anything with the community since. Can I just..jump (back-ish) in? Claim a table, post stuff, etc?
Hi there! And yes, absolutely, just jump on in with anything you'd like whether that's claiming or posting or whatever! We're pretty laid back here, so it's completely fine to come and go however it suits you. :)
(I'd honestly forgotten that there was a questions post!)
I have a bit of a tag request, if that's okay. I was wondering if we could change the Dragon Quest 1 tag to a general Dragon Quest or Dragon Quest Series tag, since there's now multiple stories for it here. (If I'd been thinking before, I would've just labeled that first story as Dragon Quest and left it at that.)
Also, while I'm here: There's an extra Fire Emblem tag (for Fire Emblem – The Binding Blade) in the tag set that can probably be combined with the main Fire Emblem tag.
Ha, I guess this is the official spot but it doesn't really matter where you ask as long as I see it!
And done on both of those. :) Thank you very much for pointing them out - it can be tricky when I don't know the fandoms and it's always better to streamline the tags into something more useful/suitable!
* Does the rule about allowing fics in languages other than English also apply to the prompt tables? Or just to the regular weekly prompts?
* Do you allow poetry and prose poetry as fills (as long as they meet the word count requirements, of course)? Or should I only write traditional prose?
* If I write, for example, three fics in response to the same prompt, can these three fics be interconnected, like chapters of the same story or parts of the same series? Or should I use a different prompt per chapter/part (and therefore post only one chapter per week)?
Sorry for all the questions! Also, sorry if any of them seems confusing. English isn't my first language, but I did my best to make sense here.
* Yes, that rule applies to both, so you can write fics in any language for the prompt tables and the weekly prompts.
* Poetry and prose poetry are definitely allowed! (And would be really cool, actually.)
* And if you write several fics for the same weekly prompt, that is completely okay if they're interconnected or chapters or whatever and they can all be posted in the same week.
I hope that's helpful, if there's anything else, feel free to ask!
Hi, I'm a long-time lurker now planning to post my first stories here. But first I'd like to cross-post a question that I just asked over at femslash100100.
I hope this question doesn't come across as weird or something, but... Would it be okay for me to make my future posts here members-locked? For a variety of reasons that involve both fandom-related and personal issues, I've been trying to keep a low profile. While I don't plan to completely hide myself or my stories from the world, I'd like to have the option to take a few basic measures like member-locking my posts at comms where the mods allow it, hence my question.
Hi there, and that is not a weird question! It's completely fine if you'd prefer to members-lock your posts here, I think we've had a few people off and on over the years who've done that and it's not an issue at all. Whatever you feel most comfortable with!
(Also I am like 99% sure the answer will be the same at femslash100100 but I will nudge my co-mod to give you the official word.)
Hi! This is possibly a silly question, but my posts to the comm show up tagless, even when I add tags. Is that supposed to happen or am I doing something wrong?
I'm sure you're not doing anything wrong, but no, that definitely shouldn't be happening! New tags won't show up until a mod creates the tag, so for example on your most recent post the fandom tag wouldn't work for you because it's never been used before but the author tag and the challenge tag should work fine. I do find tagging can sometimes be a bit randomly buggy but it shouldn't be happening consistently like that and I don't know why it would be. Have you tried adding the tags after you post? Like posting the entry and then clicking 'edit tags' and adding them there. Sometimes that seems to work better for me, especially if you type them in rather than selecting them from the box. But I'm a bit stumped, honestly! I can easily add the tags after you've posted but I'm sure it's annoying not to be able to do it yourself, so sorry I don't have anything more helpful!
Hi there! Is it okay to make a fill count for both a table prompt and a weekly challenge prompt? For example, a fic written to fill both the current challenge #329 and prompt #3 from the colors table?
In a similar vein, is it okay to make a fill count for two tables at once? For example, a fic written to fill both prompt #5 from the colors table and prompt #10 from the Florence table?
Hey there! The first one is fine, and I'd say the second one is okay too provided you're not like, doubling up on every single prompt on both tables. I mean, it doesn't really matter, I guess, but I feel like it kind of wouldn't be in the spirit of the challenge? But if you have a few fics that fit prompts from both tables, then yeah, that seems okay!
Hello. I was wondering if it's okay to submit fills for less conventional types of fandom, such as songs and music videos? What about those fandoms that the AO3 categorizes as Object and Concept Anthropomorphism (things like anthropomorphic versions of emotions, places, objects, etc.)? Do these things count as fandoms in their own right, or do they fall under the original works umbrella? I'd personally go with the former, but I don't want to break any rules, so please let me know how you'd like me to proceed. :)
Hi there! And yes, any and all kinds of fandoms are definitely okay! Songs, music videos and anthropomorphic fic would all be great to see. And I agree that all of those would count as their own fandoms, so if you write them they'll get their own separate tag.
